If you love powdery white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, vacationing on the tropical island of Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, is an excellent choice. Providenciales, or Provo as it is called, is a convenient 1.5 hour plane ride from Miami. The 25 mile long island is a tiny piece of paradise in the blue Atlantic, ringed by gorgeous beaches like Taylor Bay Beach on the south side. This unspoiled and largely undeveloped area is tucked away from the more popular tourist spots on Grace Bay Beach, resulting in a quiet and undisturbed atmosphere.
The beach at Taylor Bay attracts families with young children because of the calm waters where a coral reef acts as a breakwater against ocean waves. With hundreds of yards of knee-deep water and an absence of steep underwater drops, Taylor Bay is the ideal place to relax on the beach while the children play at the water’s edge. The pristine turquoise bay water allows swimmers to see the starfish that adorn the sea bottom, adding to the magic of the tropical island experience. Taylor Bay is part of Chalk Sound National Park, a protected area that includes stunning Chalk Sound Lagoon nearby. If you plan on spending the day at Taylor Bay Beach, make sure to bring along water, a sun umbrella and sunscreen.
A Lunch Break
A picnic lunch is a good option at Taylor Bay Beach, or you can try one of the area restaurants. Las Brisas is a popular spot for open-air dining overlooking the stunning blue waters of the lagoon. Enjoy tapas and Mediterranean dishes with a Caribbean flair. For a classic island experience, try the super casual Bugaloo’s beach shack less than two miles away for conch fritters, fish sandwiches, mango margaritas and rum punch. Gilley’s Café at the airport has an informal atmosphere and serves American as well as Caribbean food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Staying at Taylor Bay
Taylor Bay is relatively undeveloped, so hotel options are limited. Neptune Villas in the Five Cays Settlement just a mile away are a good option. Enjoy gorgeous views of Chalk Sound lagoon in a clean, spacious villa, take your meals at Las Brisas and spend some time in the cabanas on the beach overlooking the water. Kayaks, paddle boats and boards are complimentary. Fabulous private homes right on Taylor Bay Beach are available for rent, many with swimming pools, four or more bedrooms and multiple baths.
Taylor Bay is ideal for vacationers who want to unwind in a beautiful unspoiled, uncrowded setting, and families with children.
